Rare earths (4$$f$$) and actinides (5$$f$$) provide variety of interesting states realized with competing interactions between the increasing number of $$f$$ electrons. Since crystal field splitting of many-body $$f$$ electron system is smaller than the bandwidth, (1) high resolution experiments are needed, (2) essentially no clear spectrum with well defined peaks is expected in itinerant Ce and U compounds, and (3) Np and Pu is strictly regulated. Therefore, systematic research on magnetic excitations by neutron scattering experiments of localized compounds and rare earth iso-structural reference is useful. We describe the $$f$$ electron states of heavy electron compounds NpPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ and actinide and rare earth based iso-structural family.

High energy X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) measurements were carried out for the Spin Seebeck system Pt/Y$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{5}$$O$$_{12}$$(YIG). This system was found to show anomalous Hall effect, possible due to the formation of intermetallic compounds between Fe$$^{3+}$$ and Pt. To reveal this possibility, we have measured the Fe 1s photoelectron peaks by using HAXPES. It was found that the Fe ions consist of Fe$$^{3+}$$ in YIG and metallic Fe. The formation of the metallic state is consistent with the proposed origin of the anomalous Hall effect. Other spectra such as Pt 4f will be presented at the conference.

Owing to recent investigations, understanding of the symmetry of hidden order and superconductivity in URu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ is fairly progressed. It seems that we are not far from the answer. Following issues and perspectives will be discussed.

Uranium disulfide $$beta$$-US$$_2$$ showing a semimetal-to-semiconductor crossover has been investigated by the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique for $$^{33}$$S nuclei with the nuclear spin of $$I=3/2$$. Since the natural concentration 0.76% of NMR active $$^{33}$$S nuclei is too dilute, the isotopic enrichment to $$sim$$50% has been carried out for the single crystal growth. The $$^{33}$$S NMR spectra have been successfully obtained using a single crystal of $$beta$$-US$$_2$$ with external fields along the crystallographic $$c$$ axis. The S sites assignments have been made based on these NMR spectra.

Field-angular dependence of pairing interaction in URhGe; Comparison with UCoGe

The field-angular dependence of Co-NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate $$1/T_1$$ has been measured for a 10% Co-doped single crystal of URhGe. The experiment revealed that spin fluctuations in ferromagnetic (FM) state of URhGe are robust against magnetic field below about 4 T, applied along any direction in the $$bc$$ crystal plane. This is in clear contrast with the sister compound UCoGe, in which FM spin fluctuations are rapidly suppressed by a tiny applied field along the $$c$$ axis. We show that such a difference in the character of the spin fluctuations is reflected in their two distinct phase diagrams for the upper critical field $$H_{rm c2}$$, providing further support to the mechanism of superconductivity mediated by spin fluctuations in these materials.

Magnetic and dielectric properties were investigated for poly and single crystalline Lu$$_{2}$$Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{7}$$, a related oxide to the electronic ferroelectric RFe$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$ (R: rare earths). The magnetization measurements showed a ferrimagnetic transition at T$$_{N}$$=270 K. In addition, the temperature derivative showed the existence of a multiple magnetic transition. With cooling the sample, a broad transition occurs at 250-270 K, below which a sharp transition is observed. This result likely indicates the presence of multiple magnetic phases, rooted in the geometrical frustration on the triangular lattice. The dielectric measurements showed a possible correlation between magnetic and dielectric properties at about 120 K, at which both magnetization and AC susceptibility showed broad maxima. The other results will be presented at the conference.
